In order to correctly size a biogas plant, it is required to consider the methane production potential from the biomass used, defined as methane potential, the plant itself, as well as the procurement costs - first item of expenditure in running an anaerobic digestion plant when using dedicated biomass - may also be correctly sized. Thanks to the instrumentation present in the chemical and biogas laboratory, support and process consultancy is provided to anaerobic digestion plants that need to know the productive potential of their matrices and the actual efficiency and reliability of their biogas plant.

Static system to measure the methane potential (Thermostatically controlled cabinet and reactors)
Innovative aspects

The laboratory offers advanced methodologies to support the management of biogas plants, the choice of which method to apply essentially depends on the aims and importance of the measurement. The laboratory has an archive of about 750 BMP tests on agricultural and agri-industrial biomasses.

Potential applications

Support to operative anaerobic digestion plants and companies in the plant design and start up stages.

Application example

Determination of the effectiveness of chemical-biological additives on biogas yields

Application description and results

21 tests were carried out to measure the biochemical methane potential (BMP) of biomasses treated with different types of additives to assess process stability and the amount of biogas produced in order to improve the profitability of anaerobic digestion plants. Assessment of the effectiveness of additives on the anaerobic digestion process through a comparison between biogas yields obtained from biomass treated and untreated with additives.
