The system entails to monitor and to store the main thermal parameters of ventilated facades to assess energy their performances. The monitored parameters are: the wall surface temperatures including air cavity, the temperature and the relative humidity of air cavity, the cavity air speed, the incoming solar radiation on the facade and finally the external climate parameters (air temperature and humidity, wind speed and prevalent direction, global and diffuse horizontal solar radiation).

Innovative aspects

The system makes it possible to monitor in real time the thermal and energy performance of the facade subjected to external climatic conditions.

Potential applications

The system allows the actual thermal performance of the facade to be analysed by measuring heat losses from the wall in the winter system and incoming loads in the summer season. Paired with a control system, the facade could potentially modify its configuration to adapt to the external climate.

Application example

An example of applications is on two identical "experimental towers"in ABACO SOLUTION s.r.l. headquarters in via D. Manin 18, Spresiano, Treviso

Application description and results

The two towers consist of an envelope made entirely in wood with 24 cm thermal insulation. The ventilated facade (with south exposure) on the other hand consists of a brick wall, an air cavity of about 10 cm and an outer cladding of stoneware tiles. The monitored elements are: - the ventilated facade for each tower (surface temperatures, relative temperature and humidity of the cavity air); - internal surface temperatures of the other curtain walls; - indoor air temperature; - incoming solar radiation affecting the facade; - global horizontal solar radiation; - external climate. The system is connected to internet for remote control. From the recorded parameters, it has been possible to quantify the thermal flow entering the wall in summer conditions to assess the product's energy insulation performance. Similar results may be obtained in the winter season. The results may be used to assess the energy performance of buildings consisting of ventilated facades having the same features.

Technology Readiness Level
TRL9 - Actual system proven in operational environment (competitive manufacturing in the case of key enabling technologies; or in space)
Exploitation

Actual thermal and energy performance of the building envelope is measured with this method. Knowing the envelope's performance it is possible to assess the actual energy consumption of the building.
