A fast method to assess the seismic vulnerability of buildings in masonry and reinforced concrete is being patented. The preferential scope of application of this methodology is represented by buildings belonging to the built heritage of significant numerical strength, of which one wishes to define an indicative seismic vulnerability, in order to make a strategic choices to define a priority list for the next stage, that is carrying out complete vulnerability studies or seismic improvement/ adaptation interventions. The proposed method leads to defining ground acceleration of building collapse through the assessment of its shear resistance, floor by floor. The buildings are divided into five classes of resistance depending on the PGAc/PGAd (ratio between building collapse acceleration and calculation acceleration) and local vulnerabilities.
- Application both to reinforced concrete and masonry structures; - definition of seismic resistance classes; - ability to match quantitative aspects to qualitative assessments; - limited demand for resources and times to apply the procedure
Built heritage of significant numerical strength (school buildings, public and privately owned buildings).
School buildings located in Ravenna and Bologna provinces
Procedure is implemented in three subsequent stages: 1) Search for technical information and knowledge of the building. Search for historical document material concerning the buildings concerned. Site inspection; preliminary and photographic survey; sample measurement of structural elements; - pachometer, sclerometer surveys and demolition assay (r.c.); - opening holes to assess clamping and type of wall structure 2) Estimate of the system's resisting ability. The conventional resistance of the building is assessed in terms of spectral acceleration, assuming a weak plane mechanism. This acceleration figure is adapted to the actual conditions of the structure by means of a corrective coefficient (Crid), obtained as the result of compiling the known 2nd level GNDT vulnerability sheets. 3) RE.SIS.TO® Classification. Each building unit is assigned a seismic resistance class, depending on: capacity and demand ratio: PGAc/PGAd; - local vulnerabilities detected during site inspections. Over 200 building units analysed rapidly and with limited resources. Good correlation between the results of the expeditious method and those of accurate vulnerability analyses.
