Service offered to enterprises with the aim of identifying new materials of interest for the company either available on the market or under development at research laboratories. Within the project, the interdepartmental CIPACK centre gathers information concerning the required materials, their features and available suppliers; surveys are carried out at university and research centre level, thanks to the personnel's technical-scientific background and to databases accessible through the university, simultaneously with the analysis of the state of the art on the market. In this way, independent information may be obtained on the proposed materials, and possible future developments may be identified.

Innovative aspects

It is an innovative service, through which companies are able to obtain information and know how on materials that have been present on the market for few years, as well as regulatory information. Thanks to the interdepartmental centre's advisory service, specific characterisations may be performed, required to assess the properties of materials and/or products manufactured by the companies involved in the project.

Potential applications

The service is applicable in all the cases where a company wishes to use new materials. The centre is able to support the company in identifying the most appropriate material and in assessing the properties, both of the material and of the finished products.

Application description and results

This project entailed the collaboration between the interdepartmental CIPACK centre with the Effegidi company, which produces poly-laminated plastic films for electrical applications and is interested in exploring a variety of market segments, in particular the use of “bio-plastics”. The centre carried out extensive research - both technological and on the market - which led to identifying the most suitable materials for the applications set forth by the company, and liaised with suppliers. In the final part of the project, specific analyses were carried out for gas permeability of the identified bio-plastic film, able to characterise some specific products of the company and the relevant comparison with some competing products. The project led to developing PLA-based (Polylactic Acid) poly-laminated films and subsequently developing and producing food grade poly-laminates, thus approaching a new market for the company.

Exploitation

The results obtained allowed the company to acquire significant knowledge on some innovative materials which are increasingly being introduced in the market, perform tests on their use and quantitatively assess the most characterising properties of the developed products, in order to be able to apply the acquired knowledge to future production of bio-plastic films.
